My imgate server is the main MX ... I have imail setup as a secondary (but
blocked at the firewall). If the imgate is going to be down for a while, I
can unblock the imail server at the firewall and still get mail with
changing DNS settings or waiting for the DNS to populate.

Since I've done this setup the number of hits to the blocked imail server is
interesting ... I see suspect hits (large number of tries) going to the
imail server in the firewall log. Also I've seen AOL and MSN try the
secondary MX before going to the primary MX (this was found after users
complaining about email from those services being delayed).

May be I'm not seeing the big picture ... or my setup caused this issue ...
I'm just reporting what I've seen. It seams ... that some SPAM programs
send to the secondary MX or all MX's for a given domain.

Can you give any links to substantiate this claim of (supposedly)
legitimate MTAs not adhering to the RFC requirement that the preference
indication MUST be used?
