I don't know the syntax to send a message through telnet but I can see that the server wants to authenticate first.
So, basically are you saying that in my scenario it is OK to set up relay for anyone? (since port 25 talks only to postini.)

telnet to port 587 and try to sent a msg, and you'll find out exactly why spammers wouldn't get much value from hitting port 587.
