Every E-mail client that I have used in the last ~8 years will automatically link what looks like an HTTP, FTP, NNTP or E-mail address (and maybe more), regardless of whether it is plain text or HTML.

This is a must for a webmail program to be fully functional as it is expected to be there. Something as simple as http://ipswitch.com should show up clickable (this message is being sent as plain text). These three things at a minimum should be supported in plain text E-mails within webmail:

   http://example.com
   ftp://example.com
   nntp://example.com
   [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Even in HTML formated E-mails, these things should be auto-linked even if they are not. The reason for this is two-fold. Not only is it useful to end-users, it is also is expected functionality so some automated mailers are coded to send as plain text and include these links expecting that the recipients will be able to click on them.

It's not a Microsoft thing at all. Mozilla/Thunderbird and Netscape have long supported this behavior, in fact it dates back to before HTML E-mail was commonly supported. Apple Mail, Eudora and I suspect all other major E-mail clients support this behavior too.

I just want to chime in here and say that if it is a website link or email address, I think it should display as a link when using plain text also. I have not played around with 2006.1 enough yet as we have MAC users, therefore can not switch yet. But I would hope if someone received an email with a website in it that it would be a link and go directly to that site if they click on it.

My 2 Cents,

Outlook has never _ and _ probably never will follow any sort of RFC very well. Plain text is plain text IMO. If you like the mix of HTML and plain text, then you use Rich Text. Rich Text, however, is a mess as well - again Microsoft.

Be happy that they canot jsut clicking on links. This is a safety boost if nothing else.

Compose an e-mail in say Outlook. Make sure you are composing in "plain
text" and put in a link www.prudentialrand.com <http://www.prudentialrand.com> and it is highlighted in blue and is clickable in most other mail clients - in IMAIL 2006.1 it is not able
to be clicked by the recipient of the e-mail.

Open this e-mail in the webclient if you are using it and Outlook then you
will see what I mean.

If they were clickable - how would that be plain-text?

I think this was a bit short sighted and should be fixed.I try to convince

all my users to send in plain text whenever possible, now when they do their
links don't work....
