Dave,
Not every adapter driver enables the Power Management tab.
I guess that one might consider this one of the differences between
desktop adapters and server adapters. In any event, I have seen many machines
sold as servers, where the embedded NIC(s) permitted power
control.
I have seen many messages on this forum about "It is a
problem with your NIC. Get a compatible NIC." In particular, Not too long ago, I
think I recall someone mentioning Broadcom NIC(s) on Dell machines, which I have
and have never had a problem running IMail on them. I though of suggesting
Power Management then, but said to my self, "Naw, thats too
obvious."
Mike
Mike-
That's a good suggestion, and it is not
obvious. I just learned about it two weeks ago from a software supplier at one
of my clients. We set it to unchecked and it solved a variety of
problems.
It appears that the algorithm that
controls the NIC power has more to do with activity on the desktop
than with server activity.

Subject: RE: [IMail Forum] Networking
of Imail server goes down once a day
Geza,
Maybe this is too obvious, but I have never seen anyone
mention it. In network connections, for each adapter, click properties.
On the General tab, click the Configure button for the adapter. Click the
Power Management tab. Ensure that "Allow the computer to turn off this
device to save power" is not checked.

A strange thing is happening with our email server
for months now and I am getting fed up with it, so I decided to get to the
bottom of it.
The Imail server v8.22 (W2k server with SP4) looses
its networking in average once a day or every other day. What I mean on
loosing is that for example when I get a time out error on the email
client, I do the following on the Imail server locally:
At a
command prompt I type ipconfig/all, = all settings are OK. I pinged
127.0.0.1, replies OK I pinged the IP of the default gateway, it's
timing out and if you ping any other IP, the result is the same. I
looked at the event logs, no error in it that would give me a clue. If
I reboot the server, everything is fine for another 24 hours.
Our
Imail server receives mail through Postini, and the firewall has been set
up to allow smtp 25 traffic only from Postini servers. based on the log
file, our email server receves 1500 messages a day average.
So,
what troubleshooting steps do you guys recommend for this particular
problem? Until I find out what is the problem, what services related to
tcp/ip networking I could restart on the server that would substitute
rebooting the server?
