Sort of OT: Totally changing IP addresses for mailserver and primary nameserverSharyn
In the following order 1. Update the addresses of your DNS Server (eg NS.your company.com) with your registering agent - Network Solutions, GoDaddy etc 2. Update your DNS server host records so that mail.yourcompany.com now points to the new IP address I am assuming you reference your mail server by host name and not by IP address. If you ref it by IP address, now would be a good time to change that to referencing by HostName Do it on Friday at close business and the central NS databases should be updated and the info propogated out over the internet by Monday morning. Usually the records are updated within 24 hrs. Check the changes out by pinging from within your own network to pick up the DNS changes at the local level, and ping from outside your network to ensure the updates have taken correctly with yor registration agent. Make sure if you use a Unix DNS Sever to increment the record ref no. If its Windows it'll do it for you. Both changes will propogate out automatically from the moment the changes are made to the respective Name Servers, but it might take a few hours for it to get propogated out over the whole country - it depends who queries your name servers to pick up the changes and how frequently the various Internet Access Providers or ISPs out there update their own DNS records. We are changing from a cable internet connection to a fiber one. The cable connection is staying in place, so we will actually have 2 internet connections at my main site. The cable one is going to serve as sort of a "guest/public" internet connection, whereas the fiber becomes our main connection We are getting an entirely new block of static IP addresses with our new fiber connection. I am going to need to change the IP address of both my primary nameserver (which I host here) and mail server (also hosted here) to reflect the new static addresses. I am unsure what is the best way/order to do this. The new connections will be totally independent of the old one, different firewalls, different switches, etc. My internal network will be attached to the firewall behind the new fiber connection. I'll check the IMAIL KB for the best way to handle this within Imail. My biggest concern is the best way to get the Internet aware of the change, and the timing involved. Suggestions are welcome. TIA, Sharyn
