Most email lists (this one excluded, <g> ha!) insert some identifying headers you can search. This forum uses a consistent FROM, but if present the extra headers are a better sort target.
For example, the SpamAssassin users list includes: Mailing-List: contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]; run by ezmlm list-help: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> list-unsubscribe: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> List-Post: <mailto:[email protected]> List-Id: <users.spamassassin.apache.org> in every message. One of the problems I'm running into, and have been running in to in the past years, is that fact the I can select on e-mail adresses in the To field but as far as I know not on adresses in the CC field. A lot of mail on the bugtraq lists comes via the CC and therefore is not sorted. Other lists have the same problem.
