It should not have have been set to anything other than 1. Why it was set to 8
for you I have no idea. We don't explictly set the number of processes, the
only possible thing I can think of is that somehow a default for new app pools
got set to 8.
You could test that by adding a new app pool and see how many processes it is
set for.

Subject: Re: [IMail Forum] Web Messaging Authentication IssuesTed,
Thanks for your reply, but my question then would be: Why did the patch set up
the application pool with 8 processes if switching processes will cause session
info loss?
I had tested web garden multiple processes before and found that there were
issues with authentication, and set it back to 1 process. It was set at one
process before the patch, and after the patch the IClient was moved to a new
application pool and had 8 processes. Is there any way to use more than the
one process and keep the session info?

Steve,
to answer your question, the web client store session information in process.
Web gardens run each instance in a separate process.
When you switch processes the session info is lost.
