Static is always the best way to go for this. But if its not available then I think the best way to get the job done would be VPN.
Consensus it that static is the best. It would probably cost less than relaying through another mail server.
Without the complexity of VPN, the Exchange server could use SMTP/TLS to establish secure authenticated dynamic connection to Imail.
