So it should be returning VRFY results, but why does it need
AUTH? If the ports are not
swapped, I don't know why SMTP is not giving expected results. My
next
question would be "What does it return if you do AUTH?". I've not
explored
SMTP AUTH to any great degree, so cannot offer any help at the
moment...

Try a Telnet to the other port and use the same set of SMTP
commands already
tried and see what that returns...

When I did the above on my server I got this, when I had "Force
AUTH on
Extra Port" enabled in SMTP Advanced settings:
220 dhaynes2.servers.ipswitch.com (IMail 9.20 1-1) NT-ESMTP
Server X1
vrfy root
530 user must authenticate on this port

You have port 587 answering on both... and Force AUTH enabled.

Daniel,

Just checked the SMTP settings and the box next to Disable SMTP
VRFY is NOT
checked.

snip... Well, we have port 25 forward to another port via our
firewall, but
it is not an auth only port. snip

I believe IMail has VRFY off by default (ON could be used by
spammer as a method of harvesting email addresses), these days,
but the SMTP Security setting "Disable SMTP "VRFY" command "
allows it to be turned on or off.

Hard to say if yours is on or off...:
220 ei8htlegs.net (IMail 9.21 416990-3) NT-ESMTP Server X1
ehlo ipswitch.com
250-ei8htlegs.net says hello
250-SIZE 0
250-8BITMIME
250-DSN
250-ETRN
250-AUTH LOGIN CRAM-MD5
250-AUTH LOGIN
250-AUTH=LOGIN
250 EXPN
vrfy [EMAIL PROTECTED]
530 user must authenticate on this port

...As it appears to need SMTP AUTH at this point and I don't have
the info...

VRFY is not an ESMTP option, so it is not advertised. It is basic
SMTP, so is supported, when enabled.
Do you have SMTP and SMTP AUTH ports swapped?

Here is telnet to my test server:
220 dhaynes2.servers.ipswitch.com (IMail 9.20 6903-1) NT-ESMTP
Server X1
vrfy [EMAIL PROTECTED]
550 not local host ei8htlegs.net, not a gateway
vrfy root
250 ok its for <root>

What does the Barracuda support? Could use IMail's LDAP to check
for users or something like a text file (exported from IMail,
using its tools) that gets updated on a regular basis... Or if
your ports are swapped, maybe you can tell it to talk to IMail on
the other port?

Hey All,

I have a Barracuda 400 that does some spam filtering for our
clients and in talking to Barracuda, it seems that it no longer
uses the VFRY method. Therefore the cuda is not able to verify
the email address is valid. Does anyone know why this is or if
maybe I have something setup wrong?

NOTE: I have a IMGate system in from that does this already,
however the cuda has some old accounts on it that I cannot have
it remove as it says all accounts are valid. However I know some
are not valid any longer as the accounts have been deleted.

Anyway, I need to know why VFRY no longer is an option...

Here is an example for telnetting to my server.

telnet mail.ei8htlegs.net 25
Trying 64.184.24.60...
Connected to mail.ei8htlegs.net (64.184.24.60).
Escape character is '^]'.
220 ei8htlegs.net (IMail 9.21 412823-6) NT-ESMTP Server X1
ehlo
250-ei8htlegs.net says hello
250-SIZE 0
250-8BITMIME
250-DSN
250-ETRN
250-AUTH LOGIN CRAM-MD5
250-AUTH LOGIN
250-AUTH=LOGIN
250 EXPN
