Thanks all who weighed in! Now that I've got some sleep I can be calmer....
it's not a mission-critical application, after all (so sez Bill Gates :)
The best tech support and I could arrive at was to go back and do it again,
with a few proceedural changes along the way. I tried to do too much in one
fell swoop--version update, new hardware, changed drive letter, migrate from
NT to external database, etc.
Part of the confusion was the appearance of a hostname which appeared
nowhere in the registry, IMail setup, or network control panel, but which
was original to the server upon arrival. ????
We will: (1) upgrade the software on the original box from 4.07 to 5.09,
hoping that the instability which provoked this swap won't survive the
upgrade. (2) Move the IMail system to the new box, which already has
replaced the old server in the DNS, DHCP, WINS, BDC position, apparently
successfully. (3) Move from NT to IMail database, and bag the goal of Access
2000 for now. Maybe in the future.
Let you all know how it works out. When IMail gets Ron's templates <g> to
work with the Macintosh, we'll finish the upgrade to 6.
