I have been using IMAIL for 2 years now. Since version 4 I have been a
loyal customer. I have watched IMAIL go to an unknown product to something
really big because they make a good product. One of the things that makes
IMAIL so good is that they listen to the customers. Well I hope they are
listening because there are 2 things that everyone on here has been asking
since I started on the forum 2 years ago.
1. The trailer.txt needs to be able to be customized. I suggest adding
another check box in the Imail administrator that can be a global setting
and can also be added with a number in an external database like the other
options. This should also have the option of selecting what trailer file you
want so that different domain can have different trailers and also users who
in the same domain pay to not have a trailer can be deselected with minimal
trouble. This is a big problem. We have unlimited amount of e-mail, but
can't advertise it without giving it to everyone in the e-mail server.
2. We need better SMTP security. IMAIL's security would be great if we would
be able to select more than one security setting. As an example. Say I want
to send mail from ColdFusion to IMAIL, with the security settings I have set
up now I can't because the from addresses are dynamically generated. So if
IMAIL let me select more than one setting I could choose the security
setting I have now and to allow mail from a certain IP. This would fix just
about everybody's problems with SMTP on the list. We wouldn't have to pick
which security option is the best because we could make a hybrid of them.
3. Aliases. Everyone has been asking Ipswitch to make aliases separate from
users. The way it is now you can have a user and an alias the same name and
have numerous problems and not be able to figure it out because there is no
error. With an external database it is even worse because you could have an
alias and if you're offering free e-mail someone could sign up for an
aliases and have problems. It would be so much easier if they became a
phantom user, or IMAIL checked to see if the name just created was also an
alias.
4. List server. This has been pretty much the same thing since version 4.
Nothing really has changed. Sure there have been little changes, but in
order for anyone to have a serious list server they have had to go out and
buy it.
If Ipswitch we just talk to some of us admins and get some feedback from us
with what should be added into IMAIL we could make it an even bigger product
than it already is. I know it's inexpensive and that's why there aren't as
many features as say a Microsoft Exchange, but these are little things we
have been asking for. I would like to see them in a service release or maybe
a 6.1 release of IMAIL. I know I also didn't mention everything that has
been on a "wish list" for IMAIL, but I feel that these things are some of
the more important features for an ISP or heavy IMAIL user. Without these
changes there are tons of things people like me can not do. I for one have
been waiting for the trailer message for months. I give out free e-mail and
can't put a trailer message on it. Well I hope Ipswitch hears me loud and
clear and I hope other people agree with me. I will be calling Ipswitch in
hopes of someone on the development team to finally hear what we have been
asking them. I know it's hard to do things other people like, but we are
here to tell you, so listen up.
