We are considering a network renumbering plan. We are wondering about the
impact on IMAIL. Currently, we have IMAIL configured with individual IP
addresses for each mail host.
Our initial idea was to have IIS4 listen on both the old and new IP address
for a web host, change DNS, and once the DNS caches have expired, remove the
old IP address from IIS. But what about IMAIL? Can an IMAIL host IP address
be configured to point to the same directory, and be set with the same host
name, as another IMAIL host on the same machine? Our concern here is that
during the DNS expiration window, if IMAIL is only configured to listen for
incoming mail on the new IP address, any mail coming in being directed to
the old IP address will be returned to the sender.
Or, is DNS expiration not an issue for mail. Does an SMTP sender
automatically do a live MX lookup each time it sends mail out, regardless of
whether that record already exists in it's DNS cache?
I hope I am explaining myself clearly enough here. Any tips from anyone else
who has gone through a renumbering would be appreciated.
