I'm using 6.03 (which says 6.02 when I telnet to it, so it probably is the
same version as yours), and it responds properly to the STAT command (IE:
+OK 12 29485).  The response you are getting is unusual, since it is not
only the welcome text, but it is also specially generated.

How does the last number (in the example above, 31434-1) compare to the
welcome message?  If it is the same, then the response is coming out of a
buffer somewhere.  If it is different, it is being automatically generated
(the 31434 is the # of users that have connected via POP3 since the service
started, IIRC).
