Frank, have you had an opportunity to examine the SMTP logs and
see what is happening in the way of deliveries of all the messages that
are in the spool?  That might tell us something about why smtp
is taking so much processor time.

I worked with a situation not long ago where a box was having
trouble relaying thousands of messages.  This turned out to be
a three part problem.

1. The machine in question was a wide open relay and
some bozo with a CD was using it to send to thousands of victims.

2. The DNS being used by the box had not been refreshed since the
last reboot of the DNS server.  Imail was getting a lot of SMTP
Delivery Fails querying the bad DNS cache.
