Well, I don't think there are any RFC's that relate to virtual host let
alone virtual host without IP address, I could be wrong. As to why it
doesn't work for virtual host without IP addresses may have something to do
with the IP address and hostname are unable to resolve. IP address of the
virtual host "without" an IP address may not be considered to be physical or
static so in that case the two can not be resolved. I am not certain on this
though.
But in any case if your users are on a virtual host without an IP address
they should be able to send and receive mail from other local users on the
server. They just won't be able to relay mail to other hosts. There may be a
way to get it to work but I'm not sure how stable that would be so I won't
advise.
