In this case, it was an e-mail address of a mail administrator that was many
moons long gone and the account was deleted, but the administration info
wasn't updated, so it kept trying to send to his acct, which was forwarded
to another which was looped back to the mail list....Ad infinitum.

You're very welcome. Sometimes the most frustrating problems do not require
a lot of technical expertise to solve. IMail was doing it's job correctly,
but choking on the mail loop. Everyone was so fixated on DNS and server
configuration issues that the "obvious" answer eluded them. At first I was a
little afraid to make the sugestion, because I too was convince that there
was some deep voodoo going on with your server. I'm just glad the solution
was easy to fix, even if it was a bear to track down.
I'm still a little apprehensive about the mailing list functionality of
IMail. Are the any other horror stories to be aware of?
I'd be interested if the address used for submissions to the list was
actually subscribed to the list, or if it was a mal-formed address that was
resubmitted to the list because some sort of administrative user who got a
copy (ie. [EMAIL PROTECTED]) was auto-forwarding all it's mail to the list
submission account.
I would think that the list function was smart enough to recognize that it
should not send mail to itself. But then again, who knows?
