RFC821 makes it sound as though it allows lines up to at least 1000 characters long.  
It doesn't specify how to display long lines like that (the RFC was written before 
Windows, if I remember correctly).  But, if it is legal to send the client lines that 
long, it's obviously the client's responsibility to display them in a way the user can 
read.
