I had Webshield SMTP (running on Windows 2000) send out 3 copies of an E-mail (with a
multimegabyte attachment) to each of the 50 recipients. The logs clearly showed the
E-mail arrive once, addressed to the 50 users, and 150 copies of it going out.
Upon further investigation, it seemed that the E-mail couldn't be delivered to the
first person in the list of addresses. Apparently, it sent out a fresh copy to
everyone each time it tried re-sending to the first person. I'm guessing it's a bug
in WebShield SMTP (never could reach their tech support!) that happens if it can't
send to the first address.
It's possible that it's some kind of bug like this that may have caused the problem.
