We think we have come up with a (hopefully)
temporary workaround for our specific problem.

We have the client set their SMTP server
to another host name that has an IP address
assigned but is not using ODBC. (Same Server)

The accounts we have tested with this procedure
seem to be working.

This will reduce us back to the occasional restart
SMTP level. I think Len's solution to that will
be effective. This also maintains the anti spam
measures we have in place.

Hope this provides some help to anyone else who
experiences this problem.

As I documented last week, the NT SMTPD process
that does SMTP AUTH is
different from the SMTPD process handling the rest
of the session. I have
a PERL script (untested since I don't have the
AUTH failures pb, and nobody
with the pb followed thru with me to test it
againt their system) that
telnets to port 25 and tries the AUTH command and,
after a timeout, sends a
msg to a pgm alias to stop/start SMTP service.

So if anybody wants some relief to this pb, no
matter what the cause (odbc,
version Imail, Netscape) before Ipswitch does a
next patch release, I'm
still waiting to test my SMTP AUTH checker. Let
me know if you want to
test it. There's not much to do on your end

Then of course the recommendation is to up to 6.04
and see what happens.

We are still waiting to hear from Daniel about why
the Imail 250- responses
after EHLO/HELO sometimes do and don't have
250-AUTH CRAM-MD5 announcement.
