[IMail Forum] newbie concern

I have a simple single server setup. What happens if my mail server freezes 
or dies? Does incoming mail to my users keep trying to get to the mail 
server until it's up and running again? Does incoming mail ever stop trying 
to get through?

Thanks for answering such a basic, but worrisome question.
