Tom,
I just completed some testing and I find that Outlook Express, limits me to
256 char in the subject line. When that message is sent via IMail and read
by the client, the full 256 characters are shown in the subject line, with
all characters the same as the original (no unusual characters seen when the
subject line is viewed in the 'Message Source' or when that line is
cut/pasted to notepad).
I then tried a manual telnet session to the IMail SMTP service and
constructed a very long subject line (in excess of 512 chars) and when that
was received, IMail did limit it to 512 chars. At no time was any unexpected
character observed in this subject line. (but OE does drop the first
character in its standard view of the subject line, the L in 'Long' that I
used as the first word of the subject, but it does show the 'L' when I click
or double click on the message or when I view the Message Source!). This
test results tells me that IMail is _not_ modifying the subject line in any
way, until the 512 char is reached, and then it discards any characters
after that.
Maybe the client you are using to construct the original message, has a
different limit on the subject line, and/or it places the unusual characters
into the subject line? Have you used other clients to construct your test
message? Do the other clients do the same thing or something different?
If you wish to report a problem to Ipswitch and/or request a change, this
forum is not the place (did you read the Support Policy, sent earlier
today???).
