They are correct.  Ipswitch put that in there because of customers requesting it, and 
has it turned off by default.  But, they forgot to put in a warning that it is a truly 
bad thing to do!

Some spammers will use "<>" (a null sender) in the message envelope (as opposed to the 
message headers).  However, the RFCs specifically state that you MUST accept mail from 
"<>".  And, there's a good reason:  E-mail that is returned is supposed to use "<>".

The purpose of the setting was truly to satisfy some customers that must have begged 
for it.  Probably, because they thought it would help with spam.
