I think it's pretty clear legally that all communications on company
computers belong to the company and are legal documents (ask MS or
the White House), just like communications on company letterhead
paper, so many companies are interested in archiving all their mail
for legal reasons (ie, attack or defend).
Ethics goes both ways, if ethics is even the issue: an employee
should inform/ask permission the employer about using company
resources (computers, telephones) for personal actitivies (email,
porn surfing, travel surfing/reservations, reading newsgroups/newspapers, etc).
"If he were my customer", I'd quote him a price for archiving all his
company's incoming and outgoing mail, including compressed and
encrypted cdrom(s) per month. It is not a small task physically nor
a small responsibility to do securely. I price it much higher than
just vehiculing his mail untouched.
If you think large companies impregnated with lawyers don't already
archive all company mail, announced or not, you're wrong. For SME's,
email archiving is ofen beyond their means so an ISP doing the
archiving is an opportunity.
