Scott, Richard,

This is a story of my trials:

Well, that was one of the preferences (sort order) I changed and saw the
file written. I then tried the 'Forward Editing' option and change that, and
again, the main.srt was rewritten. As was the 'Type' field in that users
folder in the registry. 'Type' is the field in the Registry/external DB that
holds the users preferences, so it appears it may be a combination of the
two.

When I reset the 'Forward Editing' back to default, main.srt was deleted.
Other settings did not write main.srt, but all (I tried!) did modify the
value of the Type field in the registry.

So it does seem to depend on which settings one wants to propagate. Main.srt
does store some of the 'sorting' settings from Preferences, but maybe not
all the other settings. Those are always saved in the database/registry
(depending on what you are using).

I also notice, that the main.srt, does not always get written, until one
actually closes the Web MSG (one time) or goes to the Summary page (I did
this most often, as it was quicker). That could explain why I did not always
see the file (I did not always go to the Summary page, after making a change
in my earlier tests!) there or it being updated. Looks like when one makes a
change to the Preferences, the file is deleted and only when one goes back
into the Summary (maybe other places??), does the file get written. I'd have
to test each setting, but for the few I tried, this was true. I tried the
first 5 or 6 settings and every time I 'Saved' the preferences, the file was
deleted and rewritten _only_ when I went to the Summary page. So this makes
me think one can use the main.srt as the method of propagating the settings.

However, when I actually tried this (copying the main.srt to a new users
folder), I find that as soon as I enter the summary page for that user, the
main.srt does get overwritten, with the current (default) preferences for
that user (which were also different in the Type field in the registry).

Conclusion:

So my recommendation now would be to use the Registry/DB field 'Type' field
as the preferred method of duplicating these settings. When I tried that, it
did keep the settings in the registry and main.srt did get created for that
user, but with the 'right' settings (it did not cause the registry values to
change).

Richard, Sorry about that first recommendation!

Live and Learn!
