Common causes for this type of crash seem to be: Aliases with >50 recipients, mail
loops, overload from an incoming spam attack, or possibly a corrupt E-mail (that would
be sitting in the spool directory).

It's possible. You need to check the logs to see when the E-mail originally arrives,
and when it is delivered. If the logs show the E-mail being delivered to a local
recipient more than a minute after it is received, something is fishy. You can check
the headers to get an idea of where the delay is (but beware the time/date stamps of
mail servers; a large percentage of mail servers have a time/date that is off by at
least a few minutes to a few hours; so, check a few different messages).
