Check out Len's post for some resources on filtering.
Also, you may want to take a look at our program Declude JunkMail (
www.declude.com ). Although most of what it does currently is based on
ORBS/RBL, it's much nicer (in my very biased opinion!) than typical
ORBS/RBL implementations. For example, you can have it add "SPAM:" to the
header of E-mails that fail the RBL test, giving users the ability to
receive the spam and determine for themselves whether or not to read
it. You can also just add a warning to the headers, so very few users will
notice anything -- but, they can have their software filter based on that
header. And, seeing that you are from a legal organization, you would
probably appreciate that you can let users choose the spam control settings
they want (that way, if there is legitimate E-mail caught by the
blacklists, it's the users' action that caused something to happen to that
E-mail).
A word about filters: Even carefully constructed filters can catch a lot
of legitimate E-mail (when the LOVE virus spread a few months ago, lots of
people never got a lot of E-mails from this listserver relevant to the
subject). The heuristic spam control test we are developing will run
E-mails through a large number of tests, and then determine based on the
results of all the tests whether or not the E-mail is spam. That way, if
you say "Argh! I got another one of the MAKE M0NEY FAST scams again", it
won't get caught by the heuristic test (it would see that phrase, but also
see that the E-mail had few or no other characteristics of
spam).
