Randy,
Whenever anyone installs IMail, here is an easy way to test if it is
working, that runs on the server (local). If this test is passed, then IMail
is working but delivery to outside domains or with shortened addresses may
not work. If delivery with only IP addresses works and using hostnames do
not, this is a name resolution issue (DNS), not an IMail problem.
Testing IMail: Open IMail Client on the Server. In the Logon screen, do not
fill out anything in the POP3 section (bottom). In the Mailbox section, pick
the Virtual host )domain) and User-ID, from the drop down menus, then click
OK. If there is mail in that users mailbox, the Client will show this
messages summary info. If not, then click Send and compose a message to this
same user, using the full hostname, after the @, as found when you logged in
(i.e., [EMAIL PROTECTED], that was on the domain drop down list when
you logged in). Now click Send again and make sure the next menu shows,
'Send Now' and 'Send Direct' enabled. If you get a 'success message' or it
returns to the mailbox view, click the Check box and you should see the new
message. If you wish, using this user, send an email to another user and
then click File, Pop Login and you will be back at the login screen, select
the user to whom you just sent the email and click OK. Again you should see
the email you just sent.
As I said, if the above works then IMail is functional. You can still use
the IMail client to try other addresses (shortened forms like
[EMAIL PROTECTED]) or outside addresses (assuming you have an internet
connection). If you are having problems with these, the most likely cause is
DNS related (both sending and receiving!) so troubleshooting these requires
you to include IPs and domain/host names of the computer running IMail or
the domains it is configured for.
Most times I find that novice IMail admins and clients usually have problems
configuring their email clients to connect to IMail. Or they have problems
with (or no!) DNS, so the hostnames they are using in the clients
configuration, do not resolve correctly. In this case, IP addresses may be
the only thing that 'work'.
If I had network access to your system, I could use other tools (telnet) to
connect to the SMTP service, send an email, then with a username and
password, connect to the POP3 service and check for email. Kind of hard to
give you all that knowledge in just a single email, so maybe more later
after you try the above. Of course, you might even find this in the Archives
of this forum.
