WB-IMail
IpSwitch iMail to O'Reilly WebBoard 3.x Interface
by WebWrights
Copyright 1999
What it does
WB-IMail allows WebBoard and IMail to co-exist on the same server and
works hand in hand with iMail to replace WebBoard's WBSMTP.EXE SMTP
server, providing full support for WebBoard's Mailing List
bi-directional E-Mail Conferencing.
Setup
Copy the WBIMAIL.EXE executable provided to the iMail install directory,
usually C:\IMAIL.
Disable WebBoards WBSMTP.EXE. This is usually found at
\WEBBOARD\SYSTEM\WBSMTP.EXE. A simple way to disable it is rename it to
something like XWBSMTP.EXE.
On Windows NT use the Control Panels "Services" applette to disable the
"WebBoard Mail Server" service.
Select the iMail virtual domain that is going to be used for WebBoard
and use the iMail Administrator to create a "wbimail" Program Alias in
that domain. Make the "wbimail" Alias point to WBIMAIL.EXE, usually at
C:\IMAIL\WBIMAIL.EXE.
Create a "nobody" Standard Alias in the same domain that redirects to
the "wbimail" Alias created above. The "nobody" Alias is a special Alias
used to trap and redirect all unrecognized User addresses. See
"Processing Mail to Users that don't exist" in the iMail manual. The
incoming WebBoard mail will not have recognizable User ids.
All messages not recognized as valid iMail users will be redirected to
"nobody and from there to "wbimail".
That completes Basic setup for WB-IMail. You will need to Setup WebBoard
as described in WebBoard's manual to support Mailing Lists. In
particular using the WebBoard Administrator to set the "Email Settings
SMTP Server" and "Mailing List Server Name" to the domain selected
above.
Any message that cannot be processed as a valid WebBoard message may be
deleted or saved with a file extension ".BAD" in the \WEBBOARD\IN\
directory by setting the
Mailing List Keep Bounced Messages option.
Advanced Setup
If you require more complex handling of unrecognized messages, you may
create a special User and use iMail Delivery Rules and Info Manager
functions to pre-filter messages before forwarding them to the "wbimail"
alias. A simple example would be.
Create a new iMail User "filter".
Change the "nobody" alias to redirect to the "filter" User.
Create Delivery Rules in "filter" to redirect messages containing
WebBoard Mailing List names in the To: field to a "webboard" mailbox sub
to "filter". For example, a Mailing List called "Administrivia" would
generate reply addresses of the form
[EMAIL PROTECTED] A rule that looked for
"administrivia\." and redirected to the "webboard" mailbox in "filter"
could then use the Info Manager function to forward those messages on to
the "wbimail" Alias.
You will need to enter a rule for each Mailing list you wish to trap.
In the "filter" User Info Manager tab you need to select the "webboard"
subarea and "Enable Info Manager for the sub-area". In the "After
Responding, forward mail to:" box enter "wbimail". Put at least two
lines of text in the Message editor and press the Apply button. Now
uncheck the "Enable Info Manager for the sub-area" so that the program
will not send an Auto response but will forward to "wbimail". This
weird sequence is necessary because of the way iMail saves the values
and tries to validate the input.
Messages will now only be sent to WebBoard if they match one of the
Rules entered. Other Rules can be created for handling other unknown
messages as you see fit.
