Khurram,
The characters you see are the encoded attachment. Sounds like your client
does not 'know' how to handle the encoding that was used by the sender. Of
course, the sender could have used something other than MIME (the standard
for email) to encode the attachment. The server just accepts the contents
and places it into your mailbox, so it does not manipulate the message in
any way that might change the contents.
Try sending yourself an attachment of the same type and see if your email
client can read it. If it can, then it sounds like your client is probably
OK. Contact the sender and ask how his email client is encoding the
attachment. Also ask if this is an original attachment, or a forward of some
other message with an attachment. Some clients will encode again, the
attachment (which was encoded by the original sender) when forwarding.
