Yes, as Mike said, a backup is always a good idea!

But installing IMail (eval or purchased) will not cause the configuration
you have, to be changed or lost. It just copies new files over the existing
ones. A clean install will create registry entries, but a second install
will not need to create them (they exist and IMail knows how to handle
this).

Install takes only a few minutes, typically. And will be necessary when you
get the purchased version. Use this situation as a test or preparation, for
when you get the purchased version.
