Why even go through all that? No need to point the virtual IIS server for
MAIL.domain.COM first to a home page, create a directory for that web site
on disk, then create a forwarding default.asp. Just set up a forwarding
server instead:

If the default port 80 is being used by other web servers, one can still
shield the end users from having to type in a URL ending with 8181 or 8383.
IIS has an easy-to-use redirection feature that will forward an end user
from a URL such as "http://MAIL.domain.COM" to a different web server and
port.
1. Start Internet Services Manager (MMC for IIS)
2. Create/Update a web site for the domain name "MAIL.domain.COM"
3. In the Properties, go the "Home Directory" tab
4. Choose "redirection to another URL"
5. Enter "http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8383" (use the appropriate IP address
and/or FQDN) as the "redirect" target
6. Choose "exact URL" and "permanent redirection"
If the physical machine is not even using port 80 (e.g., IIS is not
installed), then simply configure IMAIL to use port 80 directly: Imail
Administrator | localhost | Web Messaging Server | Web Server Port
