I'm pretty sure CRAM-MD5 source code in C is in FreeBSD and Linux
kernals, OpenSSH, OpenSLL, etc, etc.

If you are only writing a "keep alive" function, then getting back a
334 from the IMail SMTP AUTH process is sufficient to conclude
process is alive.
