Were you able to grab the zone file and look for illegal CNAME's or
ip's where hostname should be.

well, it certainly looks like forensics are correct, Sherlock, but
sometimes the net just screws up.
If you don't have DNS Expert, mail me the domain name privately and
I'll have it take a look, but you seem to have done a good analysis.
