I would agree but the only way to confirm the veracity of an email address
and to verify that the owner of the email address really wanted to be
subscribed is to send a uniquely tagged email to the email address and to
wait for its return before the subscription is completed on all
subscriptions-- this is the double opt in part. There is no way the list
server should believe the from address in the email headers.
Most "legitimate" list servers have this option as you indicate. Because
Imail does not I put its list function in the questionable ( or to use your
wording "illegitimate").
Verifying only web based subscriptions in an external tool is a poor
substitute at best.
