WOW!
Bryan,
Don't know why, yet, but the answer is yes, it means 1140 open
connections.
Now we have to figure out what is happening. If you stop the POP3
service, it will clear the numbers and you can observe this using
the Telnet, for a while, opening and closing it and watching that
last number. Good time to turn on logging for POP3 service, too
(before the stop/start). That may give us some clues as to what/who
is doing this. Could even be some form of Dos attack.
The next possibility is that something is keeping data from being
written by the service, but this might have affects on other
services, like Web MSG (it read/writes mailbox data). Keep an eye on
all the running services, to see if anything else is showing effects
(outside of a general slowdown, but even that might be a clue!).
Good idea to make sure HD is in good condition by running chkdsk or
scandisk.
Did the PerfMon graph show anything during this time?
Judging from the first number, the POP3 service had been restarted
recently. How long was the time from reset to you finding the
problem? Does this problem seem to happening on any daily or other
repeatable pattern? Are you reseting the service on some regular
basis? If not, it might help keep things going while investigating
things. An AT command with 'net stop pop3d32','net start pop3d32'
lines, will do the trick.
