Yes and know..
They are commonly refered to as the same thing but the T1 was developed
AMI D4 SF originally for use as a telephone trunk system and uses line
side channels assembled from analog circuits (originally) thus taking data
from inband was not an issue.
The DS1 was the improvement which allow for B8ZS ESF signaling which is
much cleaner higher quality and longer distances. Self powered repeaters
etc.. Transmits data at higher throughputs etc.. And USUALLY outof band
signaled..
