Well I admit i know very little of the inner workings of Ipswitch.
However, we are not talking about developing a chemical compound
to cure AIDS, Obesity, & Alzheimers here.
This is an email server. There are lots of email servers. There
are many features that this email server has that others do not,
and vice versa.
Don't get me wrong. I am waiting eagerly as well. There are some
features I need very badly, and if they are not in IM7, it is 101%
certain that IM 6.0x is as far as I will go. I'll not spend an
additional dime on annual contracts.
I just don't believe that Ipswitch is concerned about leaking
great new features primarily because of some competitve concern, --
after all does anyone really believe that there is some
functionality in the pike that will blow us all away and be so
novel that not of us thought of it??
I don't think so.
It think that the basic issue is that Ipswitch knows there are
many featues we are asking for. They are weighing the expenses of
adding them with how badly they really feel we want them, and the
developmental constratins that they have to deal with.
The reason they don't tell us what is coming is because they do
not really know. They know what they are working on, but until all
the new features are fully tested they may have to be completely
scrapped. and even if they work, they could hold some back for IM8
or for a $1,000 add on module.
I am sure they do not want to tell us pop3 access, clustering,
external web servers, html messages, and a great listserver for
all only to say SORRY that would require a complete rewrite and
well that would cost too much cause and well gee wiz there are
some design flaws. Or oh yea, they are available but you need this
additional module.
I am sure it will come out when it makes financial sense. That's
what those annual support contracts are for. After all, a
significant release will prompt many who have not purchased
support contracts to do so.
They are not going to put themselves in a position where people
are saying "you bastards you promised" until they are 1000% sure
that they can deliver, and they are not going to deliver today if
they feel that can make an extra 250K by waiting 6 more months.
Cheers All
