We recently had, and solved, a SMTP AUTH & Netscape & DSL/Cable problem.
Let me report it here to try and explain the situation, and our solution.
I hope it helps some other people.

We moved our IMail 6.05 server from one machine (3 years old) to a new one.
After doing so, we got some odd reactions.

When I had Disable SMTP "AUTH" reporting UNchecked, Netscape users got send
failures. Even Netscape 4.7.5, which worked fine on the old machine, fails
when talking to the new one. When I enabled (checked) it, DSL/Cable modem
users who host their domains here could not send mail. Those people are on
dynamic IPs that are not under our control, so I saw no easy way put them
in the "Relay mail for Addresses" list.

So I had a choice of who I was going to irritate, our domain account
holders, or our Netscape users. I chose to tackle the Netscape problem.
My solution is based on how you have to set things up in the older versions
of Eudora, which is why I thought of trying it. I have not used the newer
versions of Eudora, so I have no clue if this is still needed.

In short, the solution is to set the "Outgoing mail server user name" in
Netscape to:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Use the regular account naming for the POP3.

Here is my test case:
Our test account is "[EMAIL PROTECTED]". So in Netscape I set both the
e-mail and reply to addresses as that. The POP3 is "mail.cybertime.net",
and the POP3 user is "test". The Outgoing mail (SMTP) server is set to
"mail.cybertime.net", and the Outgoing mail server user name is
"[EMAIL PROTECTED]".

This was done in Netscape 4.7.5 and it worked. If I change the Outgoing
mail server user name to just "test", or "[EMAIL PROTECTED]", it fails.
The instructions for doing this are not difficult, and the few Netscape
users we have were easily able to change their settings and have things
working again.

With a little luck, this will help someone else out there.
