Looks like John was being straight forward with you.
I wouldn't call that useless.

Subject: [IMail Forum] AARRGGHHH! Official Word Imail 7 Won't Allow HTML
The official word is that IM 7 will not add any HTML support
(ability to use HTML in messages).
I know many of you don't use imail for web messaging, so you may
not care, but some of you who have been waiting may be interested.
More and more users are using webmail. People like it. And they
sort of expect webmail the pay for (one way or another) to work as
well as the free versions.
In fact, we just started offering dialup service. We only have
about 120 customers, but I would say that 20% have have called or
emailed demanding webmail that can also be accessed by outlook
express. (we setup two accounts, one for OE and one on Imail for
webmail. -- They are having fits -- they want one account that
does both). They also don't like the fact that pictures cannot be
seen when they are sent until they are clicked on! -- Hence the
need for HTML in imail.
Anyway bottom line is that is appears that Imail has NO INTENTION
of providing this functionality in the forseeable future (see
attached email from IPSWITCH.
I have alot of time and money tied up with Imail, and have to say
that I have No choice but to look for an alternative.
I must say that I am completely disillusioned with IPSWITCH as a
company. When I think about it, my historical positive feelings
about them have been based on advice from people on this list like
len and scott and 3rd party products like Ron's templates.
IPSWITCH has really been useless.
So I guess the rose colored glasses are off. If anyone has a
suggestion on scalable web email platforms which allow html in
messages, virtual domains, SMTP AUTH. DAMN I MAY EVEN HAVE TO
LEARN UNIX. THE GEEKS WERE RIGHT ALL ALONG!
I hate when that happens :)
Anyway, the email response that i got is attached.

We appreciate your loyalty to IMail Server and Ipswitch. We use
the suggestions and recommendations of our customers to help us to
continue to meet the needs of our users. One of the major issues
in the past with implementing HTML composition through Web
Messaging is that the complexity of creating a fully functional
email client available via HTTP would dramatically increase the
load time of Web Messaging and it would create many more browser
compatibility issues. With that said, we take all customer
requests seriously and we work our hardest to incorporate those
changes that benefit our customers and prospective customers. At
this point I do not expect IMail Server 7.0 to include the ability
to compose HTML messages through Web Messaging.
I always enjoy hearing from our users. If you have some time
available next week I would like the opportunity to talk to you
about your experiences and recommendations for IMail Server.
