Yes, I think Imail would reject SMTP connection from your denied ip's
before the SMTP client could do SMTP AUTH.

No, those protocols don't use SMTP, so "SMTP security" should have no
effect on them.
If you must leave port 25 on your Imail server open to Internet
access for roaming SMTP AUTHers, then you will still have to set up
all the Imail SMTP defenses available to defend your machine.
But the 99+ % of mail abuse will be on port 25 of your MX hosts.
So it's really best to tell you SMTP AUTH people to go along with
what many ISP's are enforcing: to use the access provider's SMTP box
for sending outgoing mail. This would allow you to block, preferably
at your border router, all "outside" access to port 25 on your Imail box.
