Pat,

Actually it locks out anybody whose address does not fall into the table.
But, if those users us SMTP Auth (must be setup in their client), then their
IP is not important and can change. It is more a matter of configuration and
education rather than a Catch 22. Earthlink and other ISPs may also block
port 25 (except to their servers) and those users may not be able to use
your SMTP service regardless of any IMail settings.

It is even possible (because some less than ethical people read this list
and you and I have exposed your vulnerability) that you will encounter a
spammer on your site in the near future. Be prepared!

Daniel-

Thanks for the advice. Seems to be working normal now. As to your
recommendation about "Relay for Addresses", when I try enabling that
setting, it locks out my remote users who utilize AOL, Earthlink, etc. that
assign dynamic IP's. I'm not sure how to work around that one - kind of a
Catch-22: To button up my mail server at the expense of denying my remote
users.

> Pat,

1. No, do not create a user with the same name as the list! That is more
likely top cause a 'mis-direction' of email, than to solve your
difficulties. It makes no difference to IMail Lists if the user is local or
not (see below). This list has some local users, but are you?? No, and you
can post to the list!

2. In the SMTP Security, find the 'Allow remote mail to local groups' and
enable that (not the Allow remote View!!). Stop/start SMTP service and now
outside addresses will be able to post to the list. I would recommend that
you do change (tighten!) your SMTP Relay settings to 'Addresses'. See
Archive for more recommendations and settings on this subject.

Subject: [IMail Forum] How can I allow a non-local user to post to a List?

I've set up a List group for a company project. I have two problems with the
list that I cannot seem to solve:

1. I cannot post to the list unless I create a user with the same name as
the list. Is this required? If I read it right, I should be able to create
my list group and set the posting rules to "only members of this list can
post" Trying to create a work-around by creating a local user results in the
only recipient that actually gets mail posted to it is that particular local
account, not the members of the group.

2. Members of the list that are not local users cannot post either. Do I
have to loosen up my SMTP security to allow this (Its currently set to
"relay for local users only", and the list members have been added to the
"Accept.txt" file)? I'd hate to expose the server any more than I have to.
Stopping and starting the SMTP service doesn't help, either.
