You don't "need" two boxes. You can do both with one, if your mail
traffic is low enough.
Note that amavis PERL is in an important phase now, changing from the
PERL script that requires Perl to load from disk with each msg, to a
daemon (memory resident service), with significant advantage is
faster processing and reduced memory requirements. I recommend that
you wait a couple of weeks for the AV part.
I do recommend that you get IMGate working as a first phase and get
the benefits of anti-abuse now and which includes significant virus
catching through global filtering/string matching of msg headers and
msg bodies. I stop all ILOVEYOU, snowhite, and AnnaK with plus all
"dangerous" attachments IMGate, not with IMGateAV.
Then, when "amavisd" settles down shortly (there are alread several
people running it successfully), you can add that to your IMGate box,
or if you have a lot of traffic and/or a smallish IMGate first box,
you could build a second box for IMGateAV, having the experience with
IMGate under your belt, or wherever.
Having separate IMGate / IMGateAV boxes allows selective AV scanning
per domain, if you want to make it a payable option. We do.
