In the last 10 days I´ve been experiencing an old problem: several times a
day, my IMail gets extremely busy, SMTP does not respond to connections on
port 25 (although the service is running) and the CPU usage is about 100%.
The only temporary solution is to reboot the machine, which is annoyingly
slow.
The number of SMTP procceses running at this time is between 10 and 20,
only a little bigger than when the PC is running OK (it never reaches the
maximum!).
After consulting with Len Conrad (thanks!) I discarded problems due to DNS
misconfiguration.
Needless to say, my server was working fine and the problem started without
any apparent reason.
I immediately decided to apply the 6.06 patch, but I couldn´t, so I had to
install the complete 6.06 version, but the problem persisted.

My spool is a lot larger than usual (about 2000 files).
In the log files I can see a couple of strange things:

1) Many attempts to deliver mails to inexistant addresses, like (for example):

03:05 03:52 SMTP-(000000BC) processing D:\IMail\spool\Q65be150.SMP
03:05 03:52 SMTP-(000000BC) Trying 200.43.16.11 PRIVMSG #rosario
:15,15·14,14·00,12 gentes 14,14·15,15· (0)
03:05 03:52 SMTP-(000000BC) Connect fail 200.43.16.11 PRIVMSG #rosario
[200.43.16.11]: address not available
03:05 03:52 SMTP-(000000BC) requeuing D:\IMail\spool\Q65be150.SMP R0 T96

This inexistant domain is (obviously) also listed this Q-file, and the
sender mail is null (<>). But the correspondant D-file contains the
Worm.Hybris sent to a user in my domain, but with another return address
([EMAIL PROTECTED]). Can anyone explain this discrepancy?

2) Approx. every minute there is a complete list of all the Q-files in my
spool directory, but it doesn´t look like a queue processing. However, I
looked into previous log files, from the time whe my IMail server worked
fine, and this listing also existed.

3) And strangest of all, there are some days, when tis lockups occur, in
which the root account in the domain is disabled and the password is
changed (??).

Can anyone help me get my IMail server working fine again?
