Hi,
I just went through hell because of what appears to be a "routing" loop.
One of my clients send an announcement to his customer list. Over the
course of an hour, messages started to mushroom.
Here is the original/authorized message posted:
Received: from fmametalfab.org [12.127.96.130] by
mail.webhost.hm-software.com
(SMTPD32-6.06) id A6D1C501C2; Wed, 07 Mar 2001 09:33:53 -0500
But then, the message gets out to an Exchange Server which apparently routes
it right back to the list server, where it promptly gets posted again (since
the "sender" is still valid):
Received: from mail1.one.net [206.112.192.107] by
mail.webhost.hm-software.com with ESMTP
(SMTPD32-6.06) id AF419B00C8; Wed, 07 Mar 2001 10:09:53 -0500
Eventually, both of these message make it to yet another MS Exchange server,
who TOO routes it back to the list server, adding yet another iteration of
the message to the whole list:
Received: from gilgamesh.nh.ultra.net [207.172.11.22] by
mail.webhost.hm-software.com with ESMTP
(SMTPD32-6.06) id AE5EE0282; Wed, 07 Mar 2001 11:14:22 -0500
Of course, with every new/duplicate/triplicate messages created, these two
mail servers keep busy routing them back between one another and just adding
to the mushroom. What are these MS Exchange Server doing? Are they
checking headers for the "bulk email" flag and then just route it back to
the server - instead of properly "bouncing" or rejecting it?
Obviously, I will have to implement the Moderator and/or Password feature.
It's just something I've never run INTO with my other lists and I'm a bit
stunned after loosing hours doing damaged control!
Here the full headers of a "third generation" message:
