MX backup relaying of SMTP traffic is totally different from hot 
failover mirroring of mailbox servers.

If M1 goes down, then M2 holds the incoming mail (but its 
inaccessible because it's in M2's mail queue, not in M2's mail boxes) 
until M1 comes up.

Users on M1 can't read or send mail until M1 comes back up.
