There are lots of valid reasons for "controlled" relaying.

1. Go read the IMGate site. or at least look at the pictures. :))
2. a relay hub in a DMZ could recv/send mail for the maibox server
behind the firewall on the private network.
3. a high volume mail source (AOL? big ISP? a newsleter publisher? a
list server factory?) could use a bank of mail relay for sending
outgoing mail, so the mailbox servers don't have to.
4. a virus scanner SMTP relay
