Scott - I'm really not sure this will work on one machine because of the
different ports. Most of the time, I barely understand DNS enough to do
basic stuff. Basically, our DNS has entries that map exchange.xxx.com to a
particular IP address. If you use several IP's that go to the same machine,
I suspect it won't make the switch from port 25 to 2525 (or vice-versa).
That's waaay outside my expertise. I'm sure there are many other people on
the list that can help with that, if they can just get over their hang-ups
with Exchange and MS. :-)
To answer the Why? question I saw posted: imagine a real estate company with
a small Exchange server used primarily for their main (administrative)
people. They love the Exchange features, but their many Agents only need
basic email functionality. Rather than pay for hundreds of Exchange
licenses, why not give them IMail instead?

Here's how we did it. I'm not sure if it'll work this way on a single
computer.
We have both IMail and Exchange set up to share a single domain. They both
think they "own" the domain. The MX record points to IMail. Our Imail box is
set to something like imail.xxx.com, while the exchange box is set to
exchange.xxx.com. This is needed for forwarding.
All Exchange users have IMail aliases that forwards their messages to
Exchange ([EMAIL PROTECTED]). All IMail users have Exchange Custom
Recipients that forwards their messages to IMail ([EMAIL PROTECTED]).

I am setup imail and exchange on the same machine.
Imail 6.0 listens on port 25 and the outside ip address
exchange listens on port 2525 of the interior ip address
the mail sits in the imail mailbox, how does exchange get the mail
from the imail server?
