It's kind of like saying "How do I protect myself from being robbed?"  There is no 
guaranteed way of fully protecting yourself.  You have to determine how much 
protection you feel that you need, based on the damage that could be done, and the 
cost of the protection.

A hardware firewall would likely be able to protect or alert you to a lot of attacks.  
A "free" option is to make sure you are always up to date with the latest updates, but 
this is costly as it is time consuming, and there aren't updates or patches for some 
things (such as bandwidth-based attacks).

You could read a book about DoS attacks, and still not know nearly as much as you 
might want.
