Thanks, but SP1 was a requirement for other apps, so it had been applies
some time ago.

I have had this problem with other services not particulary IMail.  The
fix I had to services not responding is to apply the WIN2K service pack.
This corrected all my services problems I had with one server.  I don't
believe MS admits that sevices was a part of the service pack but it is
worth a try.
