Check out our "You've Got IMail!" (YGI) product
(http://hksi.net/products/) which lets you put a new message count monitor
on any web page with just one line of code.
It uses a custom ASP COM object to do a back-door login to webmail (very
fast on your LAN) and check the new message count directly in the
templates, then it returns the count to the webpage display. That all
happens in less than half a second, and doesn't stress the server much at
all.
The YGI monitor also doubles as a login form, has a Remember Me function
so they don't have to login at their next visit to your site, and lets
them compose a new message with web messaging without logging into webmail
at all. The only "drawback" currently is that you'll need our
KillerWebMail templates to use YGI, but we're considering releasing the
template code we use for it if the demand is high enough.
There's no way to get a new message count with the DB, since the messages
are all stored in special text files on the IMail server. And with web
messaging rules and folders, the new messages could be split over several
text files, with wildly varying names (i.e., there'd be no way to script
that directly).
